This gem is hidden off Delaware and 3rd in the Rivermarket area. I discovered Cafe Al Dente when I asked on Twitter for the best places to have dinner on a patio that doesn't require you to dress up. The Caprese salad was delicious! My husband enjoyed the Chicken Parmesan. We made some new friends with other patrons. Reasonable prices, good food and great company.

I had the Drop Kick sandwich on Saturday June 13th. It was an unusual combination of ingredients with chicken, pepperoni, mustard and pizza sauce, but very tasty. Also the waitress was very friendly and helpful with the menu. She recommended the sandwich. I live about half a mile from this place, so I will definitely return for more.

The best part of this place is that the food is made from scratch, on site. It all looks so unassuming, but it is delicious. I had the lasagna with what may have been the best red sauce I've ever had. The tiramisu. Oh my god! The price is reasonable as well.

Good family cooking. My wife and I enjoyed a nice date night at this restaurant. We found the food to be really tasty, and not too rich in flavor. The prices are way cheaper than other Italian places. In the family owned atmosphere is really appreciated! I recommend their meatball sandwich or spaghetti with meatballs. They prepare everything in house and have pretty good recipes. This is a great place for a cheap night out.

I'd like to rate this place higher but there are a few reasons I can't. First, the service is very spotty. Late arriving waitress left the ONE server for the entire restaurant fending for herself. And she was terrible at communicating what was going on and/or managing the situation. New arrivals. A table with kids (this is not a good place for kids) that had spills to clean up. Split checks. Take out calls. It was a shitshow. Second, when we finally were served and finally received food it was just as the rating states. A-OK. The Lasagna was good meat pie. The red sauce was terribly sweet, though. I had to add lots of spicy red pepper flakes just to balance it. The Kick Off pizza had excellent toppings and an occasional burst of roasted garlic. The crust was a bit normal though. They bake in those pans with a dimpled bottom... which makes me think of several chain restaurants. The service took so long that they comp'd the pizza. We didn't ask... they just did it. Nice touch. Soooo... I'd go back. But I'd be careful what I ordered. The daily special shrimp po-boy looked aMAzing, for example. And if the place seemed understaffed I'd leave and go to Il Lazzarone on the other side of the building, where the best pizza in town is served and the service is spot-on. That's life in the big city!

Wonderful, friendly, small local restaurant. I ate on the patio (about six tables) and watched the world go by. There are old style booths inside which couples seemed to prefer - like being in your own world. I had the meat sauce spaghetti and it was yummy. And as it was only $8 and came with some great, good old fashioned garlic bread it was super yummy! I had the $2 side salad (ask for black olives if you like them) and it was the perfect sized portion of goodness. $5 glass of wine and I was set. Yes, maybe some trendy restaurants may be slightly ahead of Cafe Al Dente. But for the money, the sincerely welcoming atmosphere and the local vibe, my money is on this place.

I ordered delivery through Grubhub. They delivered fast and it was hot. For the price, the food is great. I rated a 5 for the level of service. I will definitely order from here again when I'm feeling lazy. The chicken wings are good.

Just ordered delivery from here......got it in less than 30 minutes and the food I ordered was great! This was a first for me, but is for sure the start of many many more orders! TRY IT!!

as a river market resident, Cafe Al Dente is a great option to have when you're too lazy to make dinner but are desiring a close, inexpensive bite to eat. I can only speak to their sandwiches as thats all i ever get, but they are delicious. I have tried several different ones and have never had one i didn't like. Their brie and spinach artichoke dip is SOO GOOD. we get it every time and practically lick the dip bowl clean. I have always found the staff to be friendly and accomodating. And I can always get behind supporting a good local business. Glad to have it in my neighborhood!

Wow! Great service, awesome build-your-own calzones! I'll be back. Often. They have a full bar and reasonable prices. Parking can be an issue at lunch time.

This is a review for a DELIVERY order for 3 of us at the office. Ordered: 2 calzones and one sandwich (no substitutions or special instructions) Order made: At opening time (11am). When we asked if the order could be delivered at the office by noon, the answer was yes. Called at (12:20pm) asking if the order was on it's way. The woman on the phone said it "probably was". She was unapologetic. Minus ONE star. Order was delivered at: (12:45pm) - Minus ONE STAR Note: We are in their delivery area, 4 miles away. No inclement weather - clear day. ONE star for a pleasant delivery guy ONE star for the food - it was very good. No complaints about the food.

This is the place to go to for pizza and spaghetti in the River Market. Our favorite pizza is the End Zone which we sometimes add chicken to. If I don't get the pizza, I order the spaghetti which has amazing marina sauce!! Love this family run cafe in the market.

I went in for lunch on a Monday. They had maybe a double handful of tables - most getting ready to leave and five staff that I saw working. It still took more than 30 minutes to get a chicken sandwich and order of fries. The staff were unfriendly and unattentive. I finally had to stand up and to get my server's attention. When I pointed out how long it was taking for a simple sandwich, I got only excuses. I ultimately had to change my order to a to-go order because of how long it took. When I got back to my office, the food was bland, unseasoned and unappetizing. Needless to say I won't be back.

I like this place. Fun fact: I stopped here as the first place ever in the river market and decided I should probably live down here based off just this place. I then got to know the area better and that cemented the idea. They have a special of the day that is always tasty. I am not fond of their pizza (but i am also a large thin crust foldable New york pizza snob) but the sandwhichs are top notch. The desserts are pretty tasty and the wine selection is a pretty good accompany to many of them ( get a slice of chocolate cake with a glass of Savingaugn Blanc). On this trip i had the pleasure of their cheese plate which is done quite well with four cheeses, warm crusty baguette, and some ornage marmalade. It went quite well with the Black Lager. If I had a complaint at all about this place it is the veggies that accompany many of the specials. They seem like they were simply warmed from a giant Cotsco bag wthout seasoning. I am a veggie fanatic and love a good accompanying veggie that is crisp and seasoned, these are not that. Finally, my favorite part of this place are the owners. Gurantee the french lady will try to upsell you on something because, well she should.... and most often her suggestions are well worth the added cost to the bill. I simply love them and they make the place and authentic local business that is worth my dollar.

Great food, great atmosphere, amazing staff! The food is made fresh daily and the potato salad is the best I've ever had! I Can't wait to go back!!!

Giving this one star only because I can't give zero. We had a table of 4. The older waitress came up to another woman and I who initially sat down. We ordered waters, but told her we would wait for the rest of our table to sit down; however, she would not wait on us after our boyfriends, who are brothers, sat down at the table with us. After ignoring us and avoiding us, we waved her down. She indicated that she would get someone else to wait on us. We decided to leave. This was my first time in KC where I have ever experienced something done because of bigotry. Absolutely inexcusable.

I am a bit biased as we often refer to this place as "Cheers". I am a regular and many of the things that the casual reviewers have found to be off-putting are some of the things that make this place a bit special. This is NOT a fancy Italian restaurant looking to serve as your "special event" location. It does not pretend to be anything different than it is... a local pizza/sandwich joint with an eclectic staff with decent food. My 4 stars for The Dent should not be confused with a 4-star high end restaurant (like the one down the street). It is about being part of the neighborhood. One of their most brash waitresses has a huge heart and a scary memory. She will remember you after your first visit down to which beer you prefer. On your second visit, you are part of the family. Any evening you will find the bar filled with local folks that have come in to chat and have a quick beer (or 5). On warm spring and fall days, I cannot wait to head to the patio for a drink. I can go alone, because I know I won't be alone for long. I will always run into folks from the neighborhood. If you live in the River Market and don't know a lot of people, come to The Dent and make some new friends.

I would really be interested in knowing what people are rating this place so high for. My friend and I both ordered the Chicken Alfredo and it was the blandest meal I've ever ate. The portion was very small for the price. Our waitress didn't seem too interested when we said there was a hair in my friend's plate. She took forever to do anything. The staff seemed more interested in gossiping than assisting people. One of the staff was wearing flip flops and scuffling around the place. Completely underwhelmed. We won't be returning.

The first time I had Café Al Dente was delivery. WOW! I was so impressed. The food came fast and HOT. I ordered the shrimp scampi and loved it. Loved the garlic. My second time, was for lunch with a coworker. We ordered a pizza and loved it. The thin crust was wonderful and overall taste was great. We have been back multiple times.

Oh man... How did it take me so long to try this place?! I went for dinner on a Wednesday night and had a fantastic meal. The special was Chicken Florentine. It was delicious! Then we shared an enormous piece of chocolate cake, appropriately named Monster Cake. The atmosphere is very casual and the server (potentially the owner?) was delightful. She told us some fascinating stories of her travels through France. I want to go back to try their pizza and sandwiches, but I don't know if I'll be able to resist the daily special.

I love grabbing a beer or glass of wine and a sandwich out on the patio. When I lived in the River Market, my dog would always run to Al Dente as soon as I took him off his leash- very friendly and dog-friendly establishment!

Pizza is great, servers are friendly and attentive. They have daily specials for lunch and dinner that are always worth checking out. I'm happy to drive out of my way for a good meal at Cafe al Dente. Good happy hour prices as well.

I was pleasantly surprised. After reading the reviews I wanted to try it out but after I got there I had second thoughts. I thought just another pizza joint. I don't remember which sandwich I had but it was really good. My daughter had the reverse sandwich, good. And my granddaughters each had a 6" pizza, also good. Anytime I'm in the River Market area, I'll be stopping in.

Cafe Al Dente delivers downtown and that is why I first tried them out. Their pizza is pretty good, with multiple combinations you can try or make up. The delivery was fairly quick. They offer coupons in their menu, delivered to my building. I've also been there recently for happy hour. I had time to kill before an appointment so stopped by for a beverage on the patio. I tried the Spinach Artichoke dip from the happy hour appetizer selection. It was good, your basic dip, if nothing magical. The price was decent, but the portion size was very small. I split this and wished I had gotten my own, because it was wee. I also tried the sangria. It was good enough to have two glasses, but it was somewhat sweet. If you like your sangria like fruit juice, this is for you. If not, maybe skip it.

I was in the mood for a quick lunch and craving sandwiches. I did a quick yelp search and Cafe al Dente was one of the top searches so I decided to try it. Their outside patio seating made it seem like a fancy cafe but inside it seemed much more like a homey Italian cafe. There wasn't a staff member who directed us where to sit so we decided to crab menus and seat ourselves, no big deal. The only waitress working seemed like she had a lot on her plate taking orders and running the food. She was definitely friendly and tried to be attentive as possible. They have your typical Italian dishes from appetizers, pizza, pasta, salads, to sandwiches. I liked their sports themed names for their dishes. The Offside sandwich was pretty good. The artichoke hearts was the star of the sandwich and I felt pretty healthy eating it. The pasta salad that came with it wasn't spectacular. It could have used more olives & red onions because it was mostly boiled pasta tossed in olive oil. I was excited to try their pizza bread florentine because of their house-made white sauce but I wasn't too fond of it. It lacked any sauce and had mainly cheese. I like biting into pizza style bread with sauce oozing out. The chicken tenders were more like long pizza of chicken nuggets. I was expecting it to look more like chicken tenderloins. It tasted fine, but it reminded me of fast food nuggets. All in all, I left happy after eating at Cafe al Dente. If I go back, I will need to try their pizzas.

Ordered (delivery) the Artichoke dip and a cheese pizza. For $8 the dip was tinny. Lots of bread, tiny dip. Not worth the money. Pizza was disappointing too. Nothing good to say about it. Would have sent it back if we were on the restaurant.

Sometimes you just want a good neighborhood spot for consistently good food, nice people, genuine kindness, and no pretense. Cafe Al Dente is it. I've been about 4 times: lunch, happy hour, and two dinners. The food is not awesome, but it is very good. The menu is traditional Italian restaurant food, and the prices are good. I paid $8 for a Caprese salad with thick slices of tomato and mozzarella, and it had a lot of artichoke in it, which is great. The best part is the garlic bread. They serve two pieces with every dish, and it's perfectly toasted and just the right amount to help soak up the sauces on all that good food. This place has a ton of regulars, and it's nice to see the easy atmosphere and the genuine smiles from the owners. I went there on a date recently with someone who was clearly a regular, and I did not feel out of place at all. If you live/work in the River Market or even near it, this is a good place to be.

My boyfriend and I wanted Italian, but didn't want to go to a chain. I am so glad we read the reviews here on yelp! Sure, the food is 100% authentic, but it is delicious, and priced very reasonably. I thought the portion sizes were just right. We will definitely be coming back!

Whenever I go, I go for pizza. When I arrive she always convinces me to order the special. Every time, she is right and I will, one day, get to eat pizza again. They make a great pizza.

  • Kathy F.

Had pizza delivered, I really don't know how a pizza could be as bland as this. I asked for sausage and pepperoni, there may have been some sausage but definitely no pepperoni. What little taste there was was not good at all.

Good people, good food, good outdoor area, and delivery! Best place to get delivery in the River Market area. My favorites are the meatball sandwich and the buffalo wings. They have homemade ranch which makes everything even better.

  • Grace S.

This place was chill and cheap. It was great since I didn't feel like cooking. This is not sophisticated Italian however. It is not even as fancy as Olive Garden, but don't let that scare you. The food is tasty and the portions are decent.

When the seasons are changing from the steamy hot Summer to a more temperate Fall, there is nothing I like better than to dine alfresco. Cafe al Dente has a lovely patio surrounded by shade trees and flowers. This small neighborhood cafe is on a quaint street corner in the River Market district. The quintessential environment to while away a lazy Fall evening. There is nothing quite as soul satisfying as lots of melty cheese and a heaping helping of the pig product of your choice. With this in mind I always choose the "Time Out" Pizza. White sauce, Parmesan cheese, bacon, and spinach on a thin, but crispy crust. Delicious! To enhance your luscious pie even more, try adding prosciutto. Remember those people who say "less is more " are wrong. More is always more! Take it from me, the Queen of Excess! Top off this meal with an icy cold beer or a Diet Coke with fresh squeezed lime, and I am in Shangri La. Do your busy life a favor, and stop being sooo darn busy! Stop and have a hot pie and a frosty beverage. Indulge! And just like your Momma used to say, "Do it cuz I said so!"

I love the food here - I cannot give 5 stars based on the wait staff. They leave you hanging and sometimes down right look you in the face and ignore you. They spend a lot of time chatting at the counter areas and never leave. Hands down some of the best sandwiches I have had in a long time. They offer a great variety. I love the Asian Slaw. Their pizza is something that everyone should try.

About 150 years ago I rode my covered wagon up to Cafe Al Dente. Maybe I was cranky from losing my son Jeb to dysentery, or my daughter Mary in that river fording accident, but I just didn't have a good experience. The wait was too long and my food was quite 'meh. I vowed never to return. Fast forward to 2012, and I finally decided to go back. And guess what? My food was tasty! The service was friendly and prompt! What have I been missing? This is a very, very casual Italian spot, with a menu of pasta basics (think fettuccine alfredo or spaghetti and meatballs), sandwiches and pizza. I had the day's special which was a steak sandwich and a side of pasta salad. The sandwich was AWESOME, with a sauce that was a mix of A1 and horseradish mayo. The meat was probably medium well or so, but still tender and the bread was some sort of roll that was delicious! Good, simple stuff. It certainly made me want to go back and try out more of the menu. There are always a number or people sitting at the bar drinking domestic beers and chatting. I feel this place has to have a TON of regulars, and I can see why. It's a nice, no-pretension neighborhood joint that serves perfectly fine food at a reasonable price. I approve.

Are they putting something in everyone else's water here? Did we go to the same restaurant? I honestly did my best to give Cafe al Dente a fair shake, but after three visits featuring the same, fairly severe complaints (in the scope of what's to be expected at a restaurant, at least), I had to come share my overly-negative experiences. First, I'll start out on a good note: the food is decent. But decent is just that - decent. Nothing exceptional, and certainly nothing I'd tell a friend about. I sampled several sections of their menu, and all were just a hair over "meh" on the delicious scale. The prices were fine, nothing exceptional there either. So here's what inspired the two stars: the service I received all three visits was just plain terrible on all counts. I feel I have a good breadth of experience given that I visited at different times of the day each time. Interestingly (and again contradicting most others' reviews), the place was nearly empty each time, including one visit right around peak dinner hours on a Friday evening. Despite the lack of customers demanding the servers' attention, it took nearly an hour to receive our food after ordering all three times. It was to the point that my table was nearly ready to walk out two of those times - we were starving an hour and a half ago! Waiting 30 minutes between each water/beer refill really put a damper on the flow of a nice meal with friends. In addition to the speed (or lack thereof), the servers we encountered were just entirely inattentive and unskilled. I'm all for places with a certain flair, and I love servers that add to a restaurant's personality. But brash, cursing, whining waitresses who forget 75% of every request made (simple requests such as "Could I get some silverware and a glass of water?") really detract from any intended ambiance. I'm usually in agreement with Yelp's average reviews, but my experience severely differs in the case of Cafe al Dente. Mediocre (and also wonderful) Italian-themed sandwiches and pizza can be had all over KC - why wait and put up with awful service to get it?

  • Tim L.

Full Disclosure: I am completely biased on this one. I have eaten here many times and stopped by for drinks and camaraderie many more. I'm on a first name basis with the owners and most of the staff. However, that's nothing special here. This is truly a local mom & pop joint that welcomes everyone. From suits to sweatsuits, a wide variety of folks who like good food at a fair price frequent here. The service is friendly- not necessarily "professional". I like that! When the weather allows, their patio offers a very unique experience. With a shaded view of downtown and lots of laughter, it can fill up fast. Their pizzas, sandwiches and daily specials are reliably very good to great. We find their cheese plate to be fantastic and a real bargain.

Relaxed family owned and operated Italian diner in the heart of the KC River Market. Great service, very personable staff/owners and reasonably priced. We had the veggie pizza. Very good. Recommend the Brie and artichoke dip as an appetizer.

I have started to enjoy the little idiosyncrasies that are trademarks of Cafe Al Dente. The family that works there is very polite, but also has their little quirks and things that make them different from chain restaurants, and I really appreciate those. The little old lady is one of my favorite people to order from. We bought some goodies for a bridal shower and they were very tasty. They forgot one of our items, but I ran back and grabbed it. Their pizza is still amazing, especially if you get the one with artichokes and a bunch of other stuff on it. Oh man. I also enjoy their patio and some of their drink specials. They definitely deserve another star!

Just tried the draft pick pizza and have to say it was the best pizza I have ever tasted. Would highly recommend this cute little family owned restaurant to anyone. It is truly a hidden gem in the river marker area.

EXCELLENT River Market establishment. Went on a Saturday evening and ordered a sandwich. One of the best I've had from a restaurant, and at a GREAT price. It was also nice to see the owners around and interacting with the customers. I could tell a lot of the customers in there were regulars, but they still treated us like we had been there several times. Excited to go back and try more of their offerings.

Went to Cafe Al Dente on a sunny Friday afternoon for lunch, and found it to be a charming, unpretentious, yummy restaurant that will definitely go into the lunch rotation. The walk from downtown is perfect -- just enough to get you good and hungry. My coworkers and I chose to eat inside, since it wasn't too crowded, but the patio was hopping. I asked a few questions about what our waitress recommended, and I'm glad I did. I ordered the meatball sandwich, and it was delicious. I got it with french fries, which were only okay (mushy crinkle-cuts). The best part? It was so cheap! I think I ended up paying about $7 for the sandwich, fries and a soda.

Their "Dropkick" sandwich is a much anticipated success from their previously failed sandwich attempt, named the "Roundhouse Kick." Which was just a size 14 cowboy boot between two slices of bread. Although - when you name a sandwich after an infamous Chuck Norris signature combat technique, the expectations are varying, to say the least. I never had the opportunity to sample the Roundhouse Kick though - as they pulled it from their menu after a mysterious 100% mortality rate. I like to "Dropkick" my taste buds into a heavenly utopia of flavors every chance I get, assisted by the lovely, informative and attentive waitstaff. They're not afraid to make friends, and not in a "Hi! Welcome to Chili's, please dear god be my friend!?" sort of way. They are very genuine and often amusing. Prices are reasonable and the interior atmosphere is cozy - although I prefer to sit on their well shaded patio in order to get the feeling like I'm an uncredited extra in a Kate Hudson movie lunch scene. Lastly, from my understanding, the Dropkick was unfairly awarded 3rd best sandwich in Kansas City. I can't understand what 2 sandwiches could possibly beat out the Dropkick for 1st and 2nd, except possibly the first Dropkick ever made and the second Dropkick ever made, which truly deserves 1st, 2nd and 3rd best sandwiches in the world. Try it, love it, thank me.

This experience is based on take-out pizza, but they won me over the second I stepped into the building. The lady had an Italian accent that made me say, "Yes. If I'm going to have my first pizza from KC, MO I want to be made here, next to this nice Italian lady." (I'm going to be really embarassed if that accent wasn't exactly Italian, nor was she). The guy who seemed to be the owner seemed like a fun guy too. I told him I was picking up and he said, "For anyone I know?" Soon, Lenny, soon. Remember this face. What intrigued me was the spicy sauce as an option for the pizza base, so I ordered that on regular crust, half cheese half Italian sausage. The sauce certainly was spicy, which I love. The italian sausage was great and nicely seasoned. The cheese was more toasty than melty, and I prefer melty. I think the sauce would've come out more if I had gotten the thin crust, so I'll try that next time. (Something I just think thin gives less bang for the buck!). Anyway, I'd go again and am looking forwarded to dining in on my next visit. Seems like it would be a good time.

Cafe Al Dente is a great locals place to dine. The food is good and the prices very reasonable. The service is exceptional. For those who have lived in Europe you will find this like the typically family restaurant with multiple generations working at the establishment. The patios in the summer is one of the best locations to relax after work. Saturdays are always great for people watching during the Farmer's Market. The friendly local vibe will keep you coming back.

As river market dwellers, we go to this place regularly and I have noticed that it is quite the locals hangout. They have some really good sandwiches and their prices are low- seriously, compare Cafe Al Dente to other Italian restaurants, and it is quite reasonable- however I would say their pasta is just okay and their pizza is a bit better than that. However, I have to give four stars because the people that work there are just fabulous! The owners are often there and will check on you, plus, I swear our usual server remembered us from the first time we went. It feels like family...the likeable kind. Plus, once one of our meals came out a little later than the other and they comped it, no questions asked. Great customer service! Do beware, they get busy during Wine Walk, so service may be slow during those hours.

If I'm going to get a pizza delivered, it's going to be from Cafe Al Dente. A couple blocks over, you feel like your Italian cousin Joey made it just for you and drove it over himself to ensure only the best quality would end up on your doorstep. They have a variety of creative and tasty pizza combinations - last night we tried the Time Out - white sauce with parmesan cheese, spinach and bacon (on half). Add a hearty portion of creamy, rich tiramisu and I'm set! The coffee chocolate delicacy literally melts in your mouth :) I'd also recommend the Italian sandwiches with your choice of side (chips, fries, cottage cheese, pasta salad, Asian coleslaw or potato salad). Their back porch is a perfect summer hangout to kick back a few beers and share a pizza with friends. Nice happy hour with lots of drink specials and cheap appetizers - check 'em out! They'll make you feel like family!

Still a solid 4 star review! The service has just been stupendous as usual, and the food is just as good every time. What really impressed me was what happened last week when we ordered a carry out, and 2 of the 3 items were wrong. They gave us both the right and wrong items, and really were great about it. Even when things aren't 'perfect', it's still head and shoulders above so many others.

Very tasty sandwiches, pizzas, pasta, salads and ... the artichoke brie dip! The dip is addictive. Go there for happy hour, sit on the patio and order the dip. The portion is small so prepare yourself that you will be somewhat disappointed but after you gorge yourself on it be glad that they limit your intake of this substance. I love the attitude, location and the quality!

Friendly, lively, and good for groups. The owners are super-nice and personable. I had the pleasure of enjoying their Mascot shot, a secretly-concocted recipe of a blush pink color and delicious flavor. I've always enjoyed the pizza, as well as the conversation. I'm always comfortable bringing my little one in for lunch, as there's no pretentious feel to the place whatsoever. The martinis are excellent, and it's hard to turn down the highly-recommended cheese plate.

I like Cafe Al Dente. I meet up with a friend here as often as possible. The waitstaff is fantastic AND friendly, and everything just tastes like it should. Try the brie dip... it's dangerously good!

I've had a chance to try much of the menu, and it's hard to go wrong. I wasn't a huge fan of the chicken alfredo, but I can't complain about anything else I've had. As far as I can tell, they don't have a fryer, so anything that would normally be fried appears to be baked. Not a big problem, though, as far as I'm concerned. Now, this isn't the kind of place where there's some old Italian lady in the back making fresh pasta every morning or whatever. Pretty sure there isn't even an actual chef in control of the menu. But that's fine! There's a time and place for that, and if that's what you're looking for, you might want to look elsewhere. This is more like a locally owned and vastly superior version of one of those casual dining Italian chain restaurants. I don't mean that as an insult! Anyway, I'm with Carolyn in that the calzones are quite good. Pizza's up there, too, although I'm not a huge fan of the crust's texture when in pizza form. Nonetheless, I still order it regularly because it's good. Beats Minskys by a mile in my book.

Pizza? Yes please! Cafe Al Dente delivers on the toppings, sauce, and crust. The italian sausage on my pizza was ahh.may.zing. Amazing. This was my second visit to Cafe Al Dente. What a hidden little treasure in City Market. It really doesn't look like much on the outside, except when you see that fancy little chalkboard out front, you know you've stumbled on something good. I had a personal sized pizza and water this time and was only out $4.60. I am a huge fan of this cafe, and will keep on coming back.

Cafe Al Dente is a nice amenity in the River Market neighborhood, with reasonably priced options for both meat-eaters and veggies alike. The pizza is excellent and can, of course, always be made vegetarian depending on toppings. However, I'd recommend the Rookie, one of their tasty sandwiches with eggplant, zucchini and other veggies marinated in Italian dressing and served on a ciabatta roll. The reason I only give it 3 stars instead of 4 is because I tend to not have great luck with service. Maybe it's because I usually go during lunch time, or perhaps I just truly have poor luck - I know others have had better experiences with it. It's nothing that would keep me from coming back - I've been several times - but just something to keep in mind when on a time schedule. Other than that, the patio is one of the better ones in the River Market, especially on a nice day with lots of people watching.

Quaint, little place with great patio. The sweet older lady taking orders was as cute as could be. Unfortunately, the food was just alright and we had to wait nearly 30minutes for it, even though we dined early on a Wednesday evening and there was just one other occupied table. My pizza was edible, just bland and didn't taste like anything I couldn't make myself at home. My husband got the daily pasta special which was much better than the pizza. The few folks sitting at the bar seemed to get much faster service. If you are looking for truly authentic, delicious Italian food, this is not the place for you. If you are looking for a nice patio to sip some wine and maybe enjoy an app or two, than I would suggest this.

we were in the area and had a groupon (could have been living social... don't remember) so we decided to give it a try. it was Monday evening around 7 and we were one of two groups of diners. even with that, it took the server a while to get over to us. she was too busy chatting with people at the bar. we all ordered sandwiches. now I can't even remember what I had - it was that memorable. I do however remember how bland and boring the pasta salad was. I should have known better because I asked our server what kind of pasta salad it was and she said "like normal pasta salad" making me feel like an idiot for asking. hey, it IS possible that someone might dare put a unique twist on pasta salad at an Italian restaurant. needless to say, I'm glad we didn't have to pay full price for the food we had. it wasn't horrible, but it definitely wasn't memorable AT ALL

I LOVE that they deliver! I always get the spaghetti with meat sauce and it's delicious! They are fast and very friendly. Haven't been to the actual location yet, but the delivery is great!

First things first....try the lasagna. It's sweet, tangy and filling. If it's comfort food you're looking for, this is it. Cafe Al Dente is a classic neighborhood spot where you're always welcome. Serving beer and wine if you like, there is a great selection of handmade pizzas and sandwiches. On warm days you can sit on the patio and take in the fresh air as you dine. When you're there ask to meet the owners who are super nice and still in love all of these years. She's from Sicily and you can tell by her accent and warmth that she's there to please her customers.

I believe it's time I write about this wonderful gem... Cafe Al Dente is tucked in the River Market area, and it is actually owned by Eric Dwyer; but it's mainly run by his parents Leonard and Jacqueline. Eric likes to take care of his restaurant behind the scene while his parents deal with customers (it's definitely a team work effort). Leonard, a former TWA, loves to talk to his customers whether they're regulars or newcomers. Jacqueline is a sweet yet feisty little Italian lady who was raised in France offers tons of funny and heartwarming stories from the past. So, be sure to sit at the bar if you want a little laughter! Cafe Al Dente serve the classic Italian-American dishes like: pizza, calzone, pasta, and sandwiches. However, the quality and taste is delicious. They make almost everything from scratch and I believe it's all from the owners' own recipe. They often offer lunch and dinner specials. Sometimes, their specials are off the menu and you definitely don't want to overlook it! I especially love Jacqueline's "paella salad" lunch special. I'm not sure if they still do it, but if you happen to go in for lunch and see paella salad as their lunch/dinner special...do order it. It's made with Jasmine rice mixed with a variety of veggies and it's drizzled with their house made raspberry viniagrette and a side of their tasty garlic bread. It doesn't sound much but it's awesome! Anyway, I would go on and on about how amazing the owners and the food are but I think 5 stars says it all. 'Nuff said.

Ever think of a place that you haven't been to for some time and wonder why? So, you go back to try it again, and then you remember why? Well, Cafe Al Dente isn't one of those places! It is fabulous. The lovely Deana W. and I stopped in there on a balmy Saturday night and enjoyed a wonderful dinner on the patio. This night we chose the Time Out Pizza; white sauce, parmesean cheese, bacon, and spinich on a thin crust. As luck would have it, they were out of bacon, and, after the requisite apologies from our waitress, the owner, and the owner's wife, we were offered to substitute the topping of our choice, or to cancel the order, altogether. While we were throughly enjoying the ambience, we thought there was no way we were going to let this end an otherwise perfect evening. We chose to substitute prosciutto. Let me tell you, we have never had the "actual" Time Out pizza with the bacon, but couldn't imagine the real McCoy being any better than what we were served! The thin crust was heavenly. The cheese and other toppings divine! Yeah, saying this old farm boy liked it, is a bit of an understatement. As for the culltured woman sharing my table, let's just say there was a happy dance going on in her mouth. It was very evident the taste buds were smiling from the front of her tongue to the back, Granted, the pizza is the only entree I have had here, the last time being the "personal" pizza, called the Bench Warmer. Same great crust. Same great taste sensation. For lunch or dinner, those on a budget can enjoy this scrumptous treat at $3.70 for up to two toppings, and a mere quarter for each additional topping. This place is a must go. So, be you looking for a nice evening out, or a quickie lunch, Cafe Al Dente fits the bill. So, do as I say, and not as I did. Get there and get there soon! I've been kicking myself for ignoring this place since my first visit. Rest assured, I have learned my lesson. I WILL be back soon!

The owners of Café al Dente are so, so sweet. I've never been when one or both of them weren't around. They are so much fun to talk to and always make you feel like family. The service is pretty slow and inconsistent, but always super friendly. The food is unpretentious - sandwiches, pizzas, homemade style pastas. For the price, it's not too bad. And the laid-back atmosphere will make you feel right at home. You can't beat the great happy hours deals and they are even better enjoyed on the patio. I highly recommend the sangria - so refreshing!!!

Decent food... small Caesar was nothing special but had a few too many croutons. Calzone was good but crust a little dry on top. Service was slow, esp. for lunch... really only saw the waitress when she came out from behind the bar/kitchen to bring food, etc to other patrons...

The pizza is awesome! The delivery driver was prompt and very friendly! The negative was the salads were overpriced and did not have all the items on it that the menu stated. We will order from them again.

  • James R.

This was the worst food I have ever had! The meat ball sandwich was so burnt that they could pass for a crematorium! My friends cal zone was OK if you like a crust of crackers without the salt. The waitress dumped the "food" on the table and ran away. When I brought it back she never said sorry, I think she knew it was crap.... Sorry, but what can I say?

  • Nat A.

Super slow service, paper towel baked into our bland pizza, and overpriced. Dinner salad consists of shredded lettuce topped with four pepperoni slices and mozzarella shreds. Chicken fingers look and taste like they came from the supermarket freezer section. Vegetables on pizza are raw, which is terrible when you expect savory zucchini, eggplant, and mushrooms and instead, get chewy tasteless ones. Thirty something dollars later, lesson learned ...we will never return.

If I was ever lucky enough to have a sweet Italian grandmother to love me and spoil with me with her delicious food and funny stories of her life I would imagine it would feel something like dining at Cafe Al Dente. On one of our recently freakishly warm November nights my friend and I had the pleasure of dining here on the patio for dinner. The owner was our waitress with her thick French/Italian accent my heart melted instantly. We enjoyed wine as she told us all about the menu, how everything is made from scratch including all sauces and your meal. My friend ordered chicken parmesan and I told the owner my envy of the dish because it looked amazing and my friend was in some state of euphoria that made her stop conversing with me and only make love to her entree. I told the owner I wish they made eggplant parm to which she happily offered to make it for me if in the future if I didn't mind a longer wait. Seriously?! What a sweet, unusually kind and awesome offer. I will definitely be back to take her up on that offer. That night I enjoyed a delicious thin crust pizza with white sauce, spinach and red onion (I ordered with out the normal bacon) and it was great. The portions are huge and the price is super affordable. The owners husband is also as charming, warm and friendly as she is and he was a lot of fun to talk to. She talked us into ordering her husbands favorite cake (all homemade) which was sponge cake, raspberries and a delish light icing. It was fab. Huge fan of this place! And I am lucky enough to live up the street so I will be coming here a lot. The experience is just too cute. You don't get pizza with a side of warm fuzzy feeling everywhere.

A co-worker and I went to Cafe Al Dente for lunch today. This was a first visit for both of us. We definitely won't be back. It took a long time to have our order taken and even longer to actually get our food. Once the food arrived, my order was wrong and the waitress didn't bother to apologize. A different waitress brought my correct order and practically threw the plate down in front of me and walked off. Nobody ever came back to see how our food was or actually even said another word to us. Our sandwiches were decent but they weren't good enough to come back and put up with the bad service. There are better restaurants with better food/service to spend your hard earned money.

Stopped by for lunch today after reading the reviews and ended up pleasantly surprised. Doesn't look like much from the outside, but in this case looks are deceiving. The owners are very nice and have done a great job of making the place feel comfortable. We were very surprised to see that they offered a full bar and an extensive repertoire of martinis, that was, according to the females, impressive. The g/f and sister highly recommend the citrus flavor. We started off with the "yard sticks." Which, are cheese covered bread sticks that come with marinara sauce. They were scrumptious and started the meal off perfectly. Oh and there were like 14 of them, which I enjoyed. The menu offered a nice variety of Italian options, from pizzas and calzones to sandwiches and pasta. I chose the turkey and artichoke heart sandwich, which ended up being a very nice combination. The g/f got the shrimp alfredo, which would have been a little bit bland if not for the addition of crushed pepper. And the sister went for the chef salad, which is always a favorite of ours. It was very fresh, however it was only average size and would not have filled me. Oh and since we had heard such good things, we decided some pizza was in order. The "benchwarmer" was a 6'' personal pan and definitely hit the spot. Overall, the service was excellent, the food was above average, and we really enjoyed ourselves. Would be an excellent place to grab lunch or a nice but rather inexpensive choice for dinner. EAT UP!

Aaaah Yes Cafe Al Dente such a delightful place. If you like hot and spicy then I recommend this appetizer: Hot Wings! They are sooooo good and you should also order the Jalapeno Poppers. Let me put it to you this way, my wife's Grandpa absolutely loves them and he doesn't like much, but he chomped them down quick. The owners are very cool and provide a market atmosphere. You can also call ahead for seating and that really works out great if you take a large group. Pizza and calzones are also very very good. As for the spaghetti and meatballs I am not a crazy to die for fan because I do think there is just a tad too much sugar used in the sauce. It's not bad enough to knock it though and that could just be my own personal taste. I hope you enjoy the food there.

The owners used to own a little place in my neck of the woods growing up called Half Time Pizza and not much has changed from then till now which is a good thing. Decent prices, great food, and nice people. It's nice to see local owners doing something well and keeping the locals happy.

I miss my apartment in City Market. I also miss having Cafe Al Dente within a 90 second walk of my old home. The menu here is fun and very wide in variety. Calzone's are made fresh to order and are extremely tasty. On the appetizer side, there are pizza sticks and cheese bread available. Since the cheese is fresh these items taste amazing. The homemade marinara is also made daily and is highly addictive. Ironically, the Pizza here is one of my favorite items. Toppings are sliced fresh and everything is made to order. Some of the best pizza in town. The owner is this French/Italian lady. She's extremely nice and makes you feel like you are one with the family. Please be sure to try this place on a nice afternoon too. There is a patio area and the environment is absolutely precious. I once had the patio saved for a large group my wife had arrange (18 of us) and we had an absolute blast. Finally, the prices here are very reasonable. Everything seems to be under-priced for the quantity and quality of food you get. Please give this place a try.

This place has been very hit or miss for me, but being as I live seconds from this establishment a 'miss' night has yet to scare me away. My complaints are never related to the food. The food always seems fresh and is just what you ordered. My main complaints have been about the service. On one occasion a friend and I were effectively forgotten about. We placed our order, and somehow ended up sitting and waiting for an hour without receiving our food. Our waitress popped by a couple times during this time, but did not seem to have the answer for why the wait was so long (the restaurant was not even 1/2 full). We eventually were told that our order was lost in the kitchen. The food ended up being free and they seemed very sincere in their apology, but that hour spent waiting in uncertainty was pretty painful and seemed like something that could have been easily avoided by increased wait/kitchen staff communication. That occasion was the second time I felt like I spent an unusually long amount of time waiting for food. Cafe al Dente has good food and incredibly nice people, but I would be weary about going there if I had any kind of schedule for the rest of the day. But, in the spirit of ending on a positive note: 'yummy food'!

A great lunch spot for the downtown workers. I hesitate to write about this place because I enjoy walking in and sitting down and having a nice 45 minute lunch, but they deserve any business my review could give them. It's a pizza, calzone, pasta and sandwich place. The calzone where you pick 3 pizza toppings is definitely the star of the place. I didn't like the cajun sausage in my calzone but the rest of the toppings were spot on. The toppings weren't all stacked in one place inside the calzone either, which you get with some places (I'm looking at you Old Chicago). It's a great place for lunch; quick, convenient and inexpensive. It also seems like a nice out of the way place for dinner if you're in the downtown area, but I can't vouch for that since I've only been for lunch. I'd definitely take my wife out for a nice dinner there. I wouldn't recommend as a family place but there is nothing family unfriendly there. It seems to be more of a downtown lunch spot or an under 30 dinner spot for the loft dwellers.

A nice, locally-owned Italian sandwich shop, Cafe Al Dente is a great spot for a casual, inexpensive lunch or dinner. The sandwiches, though not very large in size, are tasty and a good value. They come with a variety of choices for sides. Al Dente also has a nice outdoor patio for the warmer months, perfect for a relaxing meal with friends.

I love this place. Eat here probably 3 times a week. Very down to earth Italian at awesome prices. Tip - their imported European deserts are to die for. The owners are fabulous, and the outdoor patio is a charming touch.

Recently visited this establishment with a group of people. We went on a weeknight, so it wasn't crowded at all, but most things in the downtown/river market area aren't on a week night. The food here is your basic italian cafe foods...pizza, colzones, pasta and sandwiches. We had heard they had awesome calzones, so I ordered one with sausage, jalapenos and green peppers. It was friggin awesome, and I could have easily enjoyed another. They have the standard KC beers on tap, the major light offerings and Boulevard Wheat. Our waitress was watching our tables like a hawk and I normally had a new beer before I could finish my current one. I would definitely recommend this place for lunch if the downtown area is in your range.

This place feels like you are at home. Tucked away in the River Market, on a tree lined street. They serve straight forward pizza, calzones and sandwiches. I think it is better choice for lunch then dinner.

I live just one block from this charming locally owned cafe. They offer a good selection of sandwiches, pizza, pasta, and salads. Its a good 'home town' honest place with friendly wait staff (often the owners) and friendly prices. Come on a weekend and visit the River Market also!

Nice place to try in the Rivermarket but I would have to say inconsistent. Sandwiches are good but some of the items are hit and miss. Service tends to be slow so you have to gauge if you are in a rush, it might not be right for you. Summertime on the patio is great. Overall, worth a try though.

I recently visited this place due to a meetup with friends, having never been to this place before. While small, it was clean. Our waitress was very attentive. Menu had a lot of choices. I selected a made-to-order calzone which was delish. They put their marinara sauce on the side and you can either have it served cold or warmed...just tell the waitress. I will definitely visit this place again, and recommend it others.

Pizza

Pizza is a famous Italian dish savored around the world. The entire credit for the popularity of Pizza in the United States goes to the chain of pizzerias all over the country. While the base and the texture of Pizza remains same across the globe, it's the toppings that differs from country to country. In the United States, you will find the top pizzerias serving pizzas with the toppings of mainly beef, bacon, chicken, ham, and sausage for the non-vegetarians. Other than these famous meat options, Pizzas with veg toppings such as mushrooms, pepperonis, garlic, tomatoes, spinach, etc. are also famous in most restaurants in the United States.

Irrespective of your locality, you will find a variety of different restaurants in your cities offering pizzas of all different types. Pizza is hot favorite among people of all ages in the United States. A large size pizza is enough to feed a family of 3 or 4 at large. Pizza is also the most preferred food whenever a group of friends is hanging out together. Pizza gained popularity in the United States after the American soldiers stationed in Italy returned from World War II.

Over the years, different pizzerias in the United States have developed their own respective regional variations. Pizza gained popularity as the iconic dish in the United States in the second half of the 20th century. Whether you prefer thin or thick crust pizza, you can find a pizza of your preference at the best pizza restaurants in your city.

Italian Cuisine

The immense popularity of Italian cuisine globally isn't unknown. You can find an Italian Pizzeria around every corner of almost every city in the United States. Not to forget that in every house, people enjoy mac and cheese as comfort food. But it would be wrong to believe that Italian food starts with pizza and ends with good pasta as this Mediterranean country has much more to offer other than these two dishes. In Italian Cuisine, there is a high use of fresh tomatoes, all kinds of herbs, great quality of cheese, all types of meat, seafood and fresh handmade pasta. Many find it hard to believe that Italians have been making noodles long back.

Italian and Greek cuisines are always mistaken to be same, but they are poles apart. The primary difference between the two cuisines is the use of cheese in most of the Italian dishes. Italians love to cultivate their own cheese and process them as per their food requirement. It is believed that some cheese is so expensive that cheese producers secure them in lockers.

If you are bored eating the same old pasta or pizza, you can try some of the authentic Italian dishes like Risotto, Polenta, Ribollita, Lasagna, Fiorentina Steak, Bottarga, Ossobuco, Carbonara, Focaccia, Arancini and Supplì. Another item which Italians love to relish every morning is a good cup of Italian Coffee. Once you taste a freshly brewed cup of Italian Coffee, you might not visit Starbucks ever again. Authentic Italian food is made with heart and soul, so go find a restaurant where you can relish Italian cuisine in your city.
